Car Loans in Calgary: A Financed Car Costs $751 to $877 a Month

A $22,000 used car financed at 9.99% to 19.99% APR over 72 months costs about $751 to $877 a month in Calgary with Alberta insurance, gas and parking. A transit pass is $126.

By the NotchUp Editorial TeamReviewed by India VargaFacts checked

In Calgary, the cost of a financed car is about $751 to $877 a month at 9.99% to 19.99% APR over 72 months. Calgary Transit’s adult monthly pass, the alternative, costs $126 in 2026 (Calgary Transit).

That range prices our benchmark:

  • our $22,000 dealer car, with 5% GST included in the amount borrowed and no down payment
  • Alberta’s average premium
  • a month of fuel
  • a residential permit

That makes Calgary the least expensive of our three cities for the same car. It is also the hardest to live in without one: 84.4% of commuters used a car, truck or van in the 2021 Census (Statistics Canada). The local risk is insurance, because some Alberta insurers have refused collision cover to drivers with recent claims, and a financed car generally needs it.

The short answer

  3. $126

The adult Calgary Transit monthly pass in 2026, up from $118 in 2025 (Calgary Transit).

  4. 144.4%

Alberta’s loss ratio on the optional cover that pays for hail, theft and fire after the 2024 Calgary hailstorm (AIRB 2026 report).

How much does it cost to own a car in Calgary?

Calgary owners of the standard financed car pay about $751 monthly on a 9.99% APR, 72-month loan, or $877 when the APR is 19.99% (NotchUp calculation, October 15, 2026). That figure counts the loan payment, fuel, a parking permit and Alberta’s average premium. Alberta’s 5% GST keeps the amount financed at $23,100, the smallest of our three cities.

Here the dealer adds GST and no provincial sales tax (CRA). No one publishes a Calgary-only insurance average, so the table uses the Alberta Automobile Insurance Rate Board (AIRB) figure for full coverage across the province. We assume 100 litres of gas, about 1,200 km at 8.3 L/100 km.

How does Calgary compare with Toronto and Vancouver?

For one identical financed car, Calgary comes out cheapest: $751 monthly on the 9.99% APR, 72-month version, versus $789 for Vancouver and $897 for Toronto (NotchUp analysis, October 2026). Fuel at 162.3¢ per litre in August 2026 and a 5% GST with no provincial sales tax do most of the work.

Vancouver$117 (ICBC, all of BC)$789$923$117.20 (TransLink, one zone)

Totals add the loan payment, insurance, gas and a residential parking permit. The insurance benchmarks are not like for like: FSRA’s is a GTA average, AIRB’s is an Alberta full-coverage average and ICBC’s is a BC-wide average across all Autoplan policies. Estimates, not quotes.

On tax alone, the $22,000 car carries $1,100 of GST at a Calgary dealer, against $2,860 in Ontario (HST) and $2,640 in BC (GST plus PST), using CRA rates. A private sale between two individuals who are not GST registrants generally carries no sales tax at all.

Why is a financed car hard to insure in Calgary?

Since early 2024, some Alberta insurers have refused optional cover such as collision to higher-risk drivers, according to the AIRB’s 2026 market report. Lenders usually want that cover on a financed car, and Alberta’s “Take All Comers” rule protects only mandatory coverage. So a refusal can stall a Calgary car loan.

The refusals commonly hit drivers with an at-fault claim in the past six years or a serious conviction in the past four. The board notes optional coverages “may be required for a leased or financed vehicle” (AIRB), and other drivers were pushed toward deductibles of $2,000 or more.

Regulators are pushing back. Since October 2025, AR 227/2025 has given the board authority over insurers’ underwriting rules. Its Bulletin 08-2025 told insurers they will get no rate increases approved until those rules relax.

Does hail make Calgary insurance cost more?

Hail is the Calgary-specific cost. The 2024 Calgary hailstorm drove Alberta’s loss ratio on the optional cover that pays for hail, theft and fire to 144.4% (AIRB). The average collision deductible was about $870 in 2025, rising to $1,054 for drivers with at-fault claims or higher-risk profiles.

What changes with Care-First insurance in 2027?

Qualifying good drivers have a 7.5% rate cap in 2026. From January 1, 2027, Care-First insurance arrives with an adjusted cap that limits average rate increases to 5% and caps renewals for average drivers at 10% (Government of Alberta). Our guide to cutting your car insurance costs covers deductibles and discounts.

Is Calgary Transit cheaper than financing a car?

Yes: the $126 adult monthly pass for 2026 (Calgary Transit) costs $625 to $751 less each month than the benchmark loan-financed car, though few Calgarians make the switch. In 2021, 84.4% of workers travelled in a car, truck or van and 7.9% took transit, per Statistics Canada’s census table 98-10-0457-01.

Time explains the split. Drivers and passengers averaged 22.7 minutes each way and transit riders 43.2 minutes, and more than a quarter of riders (28%) needed at least an hour. The May 2021 count fell during the pandemic, so ridership was probably below normal.

Calgary Transit also sells monthly reserved parking at $95 in 2026, which can make a drive-then-ride commute work. Low-income monthly passes cost $6.30, $44.10 or $63.00 depending on income band.

Calgary has no bylaw on car lending. Alberta’s rules are in our Alberta car loan guide:

  • the high-cost credit licence at 32% APR
  • seize-or-sue protection
  • the mechanical fitness assessment
  • AMVIC licence checks

Frequently asked questions

Can an Alberta insurer refuse collision coverage on a financed car?

Yes. Alberta insurers must offer mandatory coverage to every driver but not optional cover like collision, according to the AIRB. Refusals since early 2024 have mostly hit drivers with recent at-fault claims or serious convictions. The board now regulates insurers’ underwriting rules and is withholding rate increases until restrictions ease, so ask more than one insurer.

Will Care-First insurance change my premium on a new car loan?

It may. Alberta says the adjusted rate cap that starts January 1, 2027 can be lost when you change vehicles or adjust coverage. That means a car bought on a 2027 loan may reset your premium. Get a quote on the specific car, with collision included, before you commit to the financing.

What does street parking cost in Calgary?

A first residential permit costs $30 a year, about $2.50 a month (Calgary Parking). It is open only to ground-oriented homes, such as houses and townhouses, inside a Residential Parking Zone, and you need a valid Alberta registration to apply. Apartment dwellers outside a zone should price a rented stall instead.

How much does it cost to register a car in Calgary?

Passenger vehicle registration renewal starts at $102 a year, including the service charge. An electric vehicle also pays an EV tax starting at $200 (Alberta eServices, checked October 15, 2026). That works out to about $8.50 a month, which our Calgary table lists below the total.

Which costs are missing from the Calgary numbers?

Maintenance, repairs, tires, registration and any hail deductible sit outside our $751 to $877 range, as does a higher premium if your record is not average. Driving more changes it too: at 162.3¢, every extra 25 litres a month adds about $41.
