Quebec Take-Home Pay Calculator

Quebec runs its own tax administration, its own pension plan and its own parental insurance — four deductions with four different ceilings. Your cheque is not the same size all year: CPP and EI stop once they hit their annual maximums, so your later cheques are bigger. This calculator uses CRA’s per-period method rather than dividing a yearly figure by 26.

Quebec collects its own income tax

Provincial tax in Quebec goes to Revenu Québec, not CRA, and is calculated under its own guide rather than CRA’s payroll formulas. Your employer files two separate remittances.

To offset the cost of programs Quebec runs itself, Quebec residents receive a 16.5% abatement on their federal tax. It applies to basic federal tax after credits, not to taxable income — a distinction that changes the answer.

QPP costs more than CPP, and EI costs less

The Quebec Pension Plan takes 6.30% where the Canada Pension Plan takes 5.95%. The difference is entirely in the base rate: 5.30% against 4.95%. Ceilings, exemption and the second tier are identical.

At the ceiling that is $248.85 a year more than an identical worker elsewhere in Canada pays.

EI is lower to compensate, at 1.30% instead of 1.63%, because Quebec runs its own parental insurance rather than using the federal one.

QPIP, and the ceiling that outlasts the others

The Quebec Parental Insurance Plan takes 0.430% of insurable earnings for 2026 — down from 0.494%, the first change in six years.

Its ceiling is $103,000, far above EI’s $68,900 and the $85,000 second pension ceiling. For a higher earner that makes QPIP the last deduction still coming off at the end of the year, after everything else has stopped.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Quebec pension deduction higher than CPP?

Because QPP charges 6.30% where CPP charges 5.95%, a difference entirely in the base component — 5.30% against 4.95%. At the ceiling that is $248.85 a year more. Quebec EI is lower to compensate, at 1.30% instead of 1.63%.

What is the Quebec federal abatement?

A 16.5% reduction in the federal tax withheld from Quebec residents, reflecting programs the province administers itself. It applies to basic federal tax after non-refundable credits, not to taxable income.

Does Quebec tax get sent to CRA?

No. Quebec provincial tax, QPP and QPIP are all remitted to Revenu Québec, while CRA receives only federal tax and EI. Your employer files two separate streams, and Quebec calculates withholding under its own guide rather than CRA’s payroll formulas.

Why did my paycheque get bigger partway through the year?

Almost certainly because CPP or EI reached its annual maximum. Both are capped for the year but deducted at a flat rate each cheque, so they stop once you hit the cap — EI at $68,900 of earnings, CPP at $74,600.

Is biweekly pay better than semi-monthly for tax?

No. The difference in annual tax between 26 and 24 pay periods is about twelve cents. Pay frequency changes the size and timing of each cheque, not what you owe.
